Light Superficial Peels

The chemical peel is one of the oldest cosmetic procedures in the world, and was performed in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome to help people achieve smoother, more beautiful skin. Today, chemical facial peels are popular because they offer nearly immediate results and can be performed as an outpatient procedure. Our peels rejuvenate your skin by reducing or eliminating the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring, and uneven pigmentation.

What is a Chemical Peel?

Light chemical peels are a gentle non-invasive treatment that removes the upper layers of dead and damaged skin and encourages skin cell regeneration. Light peels are based on naturally occurring fruit acids, called alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs). These are derived from fruit, sugar, sour milk, and other natural sources. Typically administered as a facial peel solution, a chemical peel enhances and smoothes the texture of the skin. It is an effective treatment for facial blemishes, wrinkles, and uneven skin pigmentation. Peels can also be used to smooth the hands, chest and neck areas.

When applied to the face or another part of the body, the chemical peel solution works by removing the outer layers of skin so that a new, smooth layer of skin is revealed. The action of the chemical solution stimulates the production of elastin and collagen, essential components of healthy, youthful skin.

This type of peel provides gentle treatment for fine lines, acne, chronic dry skin, and uneven pigmentation. The formulation of the chemical solution used in a light chemical peel depends on the needs of the individual patient.

Types of Light Superficial Peels

Light chemical peels are also known as fruit acid peels. Glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that occurs naturally in sugar cane, is the most common ingredient of light chemical peels. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are derived from fruit, sugar, sour milk, and other natural sources. At Illuminesse, we use naturally derived fruit and milk based peels to beautiful refreshing results. The ingredients and formulation of a light chemical peel, are customised to the specific patient’s skin care needs. With light chemical peels, the chemical solution is left on the skin for a relatively short amount of time.

Our favourites are glycolic acid peels, lactic acid peels, and mixed fruit acid peels. Our mixed fruit acid peels are derived from sugar cane, apples, citrus fruit, and grapes.

Chemical peels are typically used to restore a youthful, vibrant appearance to wrinkly, blotchy, sun-damaged skin.

Who's Suitable for Light Peels?

Good candidates for light chemical peels are patients who have relatively mild skin imperfections and conditions, and who want to gently rejuvenate and enhance the appearance of their skin without the recovery time of harsher treatments. Our light peels are a safe and effective way to improve the look of sun-damaged skin, and they are helpful in reducing mild acne scars and fine lines. Because these light chemical peels exfoliate the surface of the skin and unclog pores, they are also considered an effective type of chemical peel for acne treatment.

THE PROCEDURE

The treatment time with light peels is under 20 minutes. A solution of the most suitable peel will be applied to the face for a few minutes. During that time, there will be a stinging or mild burning sensation as the peel begins to work. After a few minutes, the peel will be neutralised and rinsed off your face. Your skin will be red with a sun burned appearance. At this point, your face will readily absorb vitamin nutrients, which we will place on your face. Sunblock and sun protection with a hat are mandatory.

Your skin should flake mildly or be slightly irritated after a light peel. You should be able to return to work or everyday activities almost immediately after treatment. Light mineral makeup may be placed.

You should use a gentle cleanser and specified moisturising lotion, and to avoid exposing the treated skin to the sun. Our skin care line of products are specially formulated to enhance your cosmetic procedures, such as these peels.

Following your light chemical peel, you will notice that the treated skin has improved tone, texture, and pigmentation. You should see further improvement as your course of treatments progresses.

Are Multiple Light Peels Required to Achieve Desired Results?

Unlike deep chemical peels, which require only one session, patients generally undergo five to eight light chemical peels to achieve optimal results. Just as the formulation of the light chemical peel solution is customised for each patient, the number and spacing of the treatments varies according to individualised treatment plan for each patient.
